Tie Down Ratchet And Cargo Straps
When a load of merchandise is to be transported by train, flatbed trailer, vehicle or airplane, it must be tied down securely with ratchet, winch or cargo straps to prevent the load from shifting in transport. Also important, is the strap must be smooth and of a thickness which will prevent damage not only to the load items, but also the strap itself.
Made of a durable smooth coated polyester nylon webbing, cargo straps are attached by a secure hook or buckle and work in the same way load straps do. Winches located on both sides of flatbed trucks are utilized by locking the straps into place securely after winding the cargo tie down through the hook as tightly as possible.
Because of the danger of a load shifting during transport, the tie downs must be of heavy duty material such as polyester woven nylon which is available in several lengths and strengths. The longest lengths are one hundred feet with a two to four inch thickness.
Load, winch and cargo straps all work to do one thing, secure cargo. There are several types, sizes and lengths of straps for purchase and each are specific to the load they will be restraining. One particular strap is called the cargo triangle which is three inches thick and thirty feet long.
The triangle fits over the load pins and utilizes the winch for tightening, it’s load weight maximum is five thousand pounds. Another is called the U.S.G.I. Ten straps and it is used by the military and hunters alike. It has a strong buckle made from steel, and comes in packages of ten.
One flatbed trailer cargo strap even the highway patrol recommends, is the heavy duty twenty seven foot strap and has a weight limit breakage of twenty thousand pounds. Most straps are spring loaded and easy to cut to the desired lengths.
The cargo winch strap has its ends heated up to prevent fraying and coming apart. This strap also is four inches thick with a length of twenty seven feet.
Also contains the flat hook needed for winching the load as securely as possible. Utility woven polyester nylon is a versatile product indeed.
