Hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy, have always been steeped in myths. Some consider them to be occult whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Given below are some common misconceptions associated with hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with black magic of any kind. It borders more on the science of the human mind and is very simple to practice for anyone who is prepared to learn it. Even people who have observed hypnosis on others usually refuse to believe in it. They say that hypnotised subjects allow practitioners to perform well in their art by not displaying enough mental strength to withstand the effect of their words. That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another misconception that has been circulating for quite some time now. An individual under hypnosis does not get shut off from the external world, but remains completely conscious of the goings on around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes entirely and is hence able to focus fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.

Some scientific discoveries have claimed that only about 5% of humanity is suitable to be hypnotized, which is the third myth on this list. Many people take hypnosis to be a form of meditation. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and generally has nothing to do with communication. Similarly, a state of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not true. Trance is again a mental state devoid of any communication, on the other hand communication forms the very foundation of the hypnosis method.

It is commonly believed that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot cause transformations in appearance or in behavioural patterns of an individual. Hypnosis certainly cannot alter the body in abnormal ways. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by altering behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.
